R.A. Brown felt coming into to last Saturday’s UARA-Stars race at
Tri-County Motor Speedway that he had a chance to collect a good
finish. By
the end of the night Brown did more than just compete.
Brown was able to get Jake Crum on lap 126 and held on to win the Bad
Boys
Mowers 150 presented by Corriher Implement Company for his first career
win
in the late model stock touring series.
Brown, who has competed at TCMS regularly during the 2007 season and
become
the first repeat winner at the track back in July, felt his experience
racing at the four-tenths mile facility all season would pay dividends.
“I don’t know what it is about this place but every time our car
gets out
of whack we can bring it here and we get it right again,” said an
elated
Brown in victory lane. Jake and I raced each other clean there for a
while
and it was a lot of fun.”
Racing clean was an understatement as the duo brought the fans to
their
feet as they raced side by side from lap 118 until Brown made the pass
for
good on lap 126.
Crum, who also led the most laps at the first race at Bristol Motor
Speedway last month before falling back late in the event, said his car
just
went away late in the race.
“We were just riding around for 50 laps or so in the lead and then
the car
just got very loose,” said Crum. “My car got very loose in turn two
and it
allowed R.A. to get by me. We had a good car and I even think the red
flag
we had might have helped but we got too loose in the end.”
The red flag Crum mentioned was given to the field on lap 89 when
Junior
Franks hit a slowing Clay Greenfield coming out of turn two and sent
Franks’
car tumbling down the backstretch destroying his car. Franks walked
away
without injury after barrel-rolling his car three times down the
backstretch.
The race was slowed two more times by caution on the final 60 laps of
the
race with the final of six cautions flags thrown for a spin on lap 144
that
set up a green, white, checkered finish.
Brown know Crum had a good car and wanted to make sure he got a good
restart on lap 149.
“I didn’t want to see that last caution but thankfully our car was
good
enough to jump out and stay in front,” added brown. “I am just
happy to get
the win. We planning on running about two or three more races this year
and
I hope we can get another one.”
Brown started from the pole position but was quickly passed by Mark
Setzer
for the lead on the first lap and Setzer remained out front until Crum
took
the top spot on lap 11 where he remained until Brown’s pass.
While Setzer finished a solid third holding off Furr and BJ Mackey who
followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.
“We were just too loose all night long and couldn’t get much grip
(on the
track),” said Setzer. “We did all we could tonight with our car.
The guys
behind all were running the same line and we are happy to hold on to
third
place.”
Roger Newton finished sixth with Matt DiBenedetto finishing seventh
and
taking rookie of the race honors. Kevin Leicht, Todd Goble and Lee
Tissot
completed the top 10.
The top five drivers in the point standings all finished in the top 10
except Alex Yontz who fell out of the race on lap 22 after suffering
heavy
front end damage in an accident with Greenfield on the front stretch.
The UARA-Stars return to action at Franklin County Speedway on
September
15.

TOUGH NIGHT FOR SHELL: A total of 29 drivers attempted to qualify for
the
Bad Boy Mowers 150 with Zeke Shell the only driver to not start the
race.
Shell suffered damage to his car on his qualifying attempt and was
forced to
load early and go home.
GOOD START FOR WALLACE: Darrell Wallace, Jr. finished a respectable
14-place on the lead lap in his first career UARA start. Wallace ran as
high
as eighth before losing a lap on lap 74 after spinning in turn four.
YELTON SUFFERS MECHANICAL WOES: Former TCMS competitor Jamie Yelton
finished a disappointing 23 after suffering mechanical problems most of
the
night that almost prevented him from making the race as his crew worked
on
the car during the on-track autograph session prior to the race.
CELEBRATION FOR SERIES OFFICIALS: UARA-Stars Series director Kerry
Bodenhamer and his wife, Wink, celebrated their 36 wedding anniversary
after
the race. Both are actively involved in day-to-day operations of the
