McCall Wins the Circle Wheel 150 at Orange County Speedway
Matt McCall has done something that hasn’t been done since 2006. McCall claimed a second UARA season victory before the half way point of the season. McCall did so in his former championship style. He claimed the Sunoco Pole at 14.300 followed by Paddy Rodenbeck with the KLB Race Cars & Parts outside pole of 14.415. McCall took the lead on lap one and never gave it up. McCall’s run was not without many challenges throughout the night.
On the green flag lap coming out of turn two the car of Brennan Poole gets loose and collects the car of Andy Loden ending Loden’s night before he even begins.
The freight train begins with McCall being pursued by Rodenbeck, Brandon McReynolds, Richard Boswell II, Ryan Glenski, Garrett Campbell, Darrell Wallace, Jr., Coleman Pressley, Kyle Grissom and Jake Crum rounding out the top ten. The engine is definitely not leaving the train behind. They are all bumper to bumper, side by side and with the petal to the metal.
Grissom, Crum and Caudill make the move
on Lawson in their challenge to the front. Back in the pack the action
is just as fierce as Joey Bryant passes Dylan Presnell on his efforts to
head on up through the field. By lap 21 Coleman Pressley moves on by
Glenski for seventh spot. Glenski making his first UARA visit learns
how tough a bunch the UARA STARS are as Grissom, Caudill and Crum all
put the moves on him like a slingshot.
Pressley will pass Wallace for 6th spot by lap 30. A few laps later Crum passes Glenski for tenth. The second caution falls on lap 44 as the Presnell car spins in turn one. Back to green McCall is still on the point being challenged by Rodenbeck, and McReynolds. Caudill passes Bryant for 8th on lap 58. Darrell Wallace Jr. and Jamey Caudill have the fans on their feet stomping and yelling as they run side by side, lap after lap. Seven 7 laps later Caudill finally sails on by Wallace. During this actions McReynolds sails on to second place around Rodenbeck.
Caution three falls on lap 75 with the spin of Garrett Campbell in turns one and two. Crum will pass Wallace on the green flag lap to gain position 7 followed shortly by Stacy Puryear, Garrett Campbell and Ryan Gray. Crum puts his move on Caudill and passes him for 5th on lap 94.
McReynolds is giving McCall a run for the money trying his best to make the move when that sickening sign of smoke erupts from under the McReynolds machine ending his night and a chance for his second 2009 win. This engine failure will bring out the 4th caution. Third place driver Boswell’s car stalls during the caution and is pushed across the line by teammate Owen Kelly. This will put Boswell near the back of the pack as the blend rule is in effect.
The field will take the green on lap 115
only to go caution again on lap 118 as the Glenski car spins on the
front stretch.
At this point it is McCall, Pressley, Crum, Caudill, Puryear, Campbell, Gray, Boswell and Wallace and Scott Turlington as the top ten. Caution 6 flies as Glenski spins in turn two.
The field is back to green on lap 132 and Boswell has charged to 8th place. Boswell, Campbell and Gray are in a fierce battle. Boswell jumps to 6th by lap 139 then to fifth by lap 141. These cars are nose to tail, side by side and all over the place racing as hard as the fans could wish to see. Boswell charges into turn four on lap 142 to make the pass on Puryear. Boswell gets a little loose and then the cars start spinning collecting Campbell and Wallace along with them. Campbell’s car hits hard into the wall. Puryear will drive on into the pits ending his night there. Boswell will not be as lucky and will be towed in. Wallace will continue on and finish in the lead lap. Boswell will receive the Aluminum Racing Products Hard Luck Award for his efforts.
Rookie Michael Rouse who managed to stay out of trouble and run a good race finishing 8th will come home as the UARA Rookie of the Race. Matt McCall will claim the B Square Janitorial Clean Sweep Award for starting and finishing in the same position and also the RE Suspension First Place award. McCall’s engine builders Long Brothers Racing will take home the Comp Cams Engine Builder of the Race Award. Ryan Gray will receive the G Force Shift of the Race award after starting 21st and coming home with a 5th place finish, a gain of 16 positions.
McCall will come out of Orange County holding the point lead by a slim margin of 6 points over Jamey Caudill.
